The development mobile technology has advanced a great deal in recent years, and has made possible the creation of mobile solutions capable of bringing great advantages to society as a whole. However, in spite of these advances, many barriers remain and others have emerged with the creation of new technologies.

Users with special needs, including persons with disabilities and the elderly, still face numerous difficulties when trying to get access to the content and the services provided by the information society. This is partly due to the fact that there is still little knowledge about the real needs of these groups, and of the technological solutions already available.

Amovil’s Accessible and User Friendly Mobile Technology Design White Paper aims to provide information on mobile technology accessibility to all users, including developers, manufacturers and other organizations. This document describes the requirements for making mobile devices accessible. It also offers a series of guidelines that explain the Design for All principles and criteria to make accessible applications, mobile web content and other services.

Amóvil’s White Paper serves a double objective:

  • To provide manufacturers with a set of accessibility guidelines they should take in consideration when designing mobile technology to make it universally accessible and user-friendly.
  • To make available tools that help users identify mobile devices, assistive technologies, and services best suited for their needs by creating a knowledge base about accessibility in products and existing services.

The Accessible and User Friendly Mobile Technology Design White Paper is a result of the project “An Experimental Study for the Identification and Comparison of Accessible and User-Friendly Internet Mobile Technology” led by the ONCE Foundation and co-financed by Plan Avanza. It has been updated as a part of an agreement signed between the ONCE Foundation and Vodafone Spain Foundation, Amóvil’s official sponsor.

This paper is open to the contribution of users, manufacturers, developers and service providers as well as accessibility experts and other organizations. Amóvil website is based on the Web 2.0 philosophy enabling ONCE Foundation incorporate new knowledge that arises from the mobile communication environment.
