The SPC Felicity

The SPC Felicity is a basic feature phone specially designed for older adults. This device is adequate for people with low vision, profound deafness, poor manual dexterity and poor comprehension skills. Amóvil was able to review this phone, thanks to a loan by Orange.

General features and specifications

The phone, which has been designed in clamshell style, measures 101 x 53 x 17.8 mm and weighs 64.5 grams. Its main display is a 2.4 inches OLED panel that includes large fonts and high contrast colors. It also has a 1.3 inches external display for notifications.

The settings menu is quite simple offering only seven options which include a calendar, a calculator, a chronometer and a magnifying glass, among others. This phone is also equipped with a photo and video camera. All videos made can be played in the phone’s main screen.

In addition, there is a SOS button on the backside of the phone. Users can save up to five contacts and edit their own emergency message. The phone comes with Bluetooth.

Accessibility review

There is no accessibility settings menu available. However, there are several features includes than can contribute to improve the experience of users with special needs.

Vision

The SPC Felicity is not adequate for blind users because it lacks a screen reader and is not compatible with any third party app that offers this service.

However, it could be suitable for some users with low vision. Besides having a screen with large fonts and high contrast colors, users can customize the brightness of the screen to meet their needs. Nevertheless, those with color blindness may have a less than a satisfactory experience as this device does not allow customizing screen colors.

Hearing

The phone is quite loud, has an acceptable vibration level and support text messaging. However, because there is no information available on the hearing compatibility rating, Amóvil cannot recommend it to users with disabilities who wear hearing prosthetics.

Dexterity

The SPC Felicity is adequate for disabled users with poor dexterity skills. Besides being lightweight and easy to grasp, it has a predictive text feature, albeit rudimentary, that works well. In addition, physical keys are large and easy to press.

Disabled users with little or no dexterity skills, on the other hand, may have a hard time using this phone. It does not have a speech recognition feature that would allow them to control the phone with their voices. Also, while it is possible to use the keypad with writing sticks, handling the volume control or the camera may be challenging because the control buttons are located on the side.

Comprehension

The SPC Felicity is adequate for users with comprehension issues and/or cognitive disabilities. The Settings menu is quite simple to use and understand and the icons design comply with accessibility standards.

However, the contact agenda is not customizable. Users will not be able to add a picture or an image to their contacts.
