Alcaltel 20.01

The Alcatel 20.01 that Amóvil reviewed thanks to a loan by Orange, is a phone designed for users who don’t really require anything but a simple mobile device. Equipped with basic specs, this handset also includes features that accommodate the needs of persons with low vision, hearing loss and poor manual dexterity skills.

The phone weights only 89 grams and has dimensions of 112x 61.5 x 12.8 mm. It includes a 2.4 –inch TFT screen with a resolution of 320x240 pixels that displays large icons and fonts. In addition, it has a very simple menu system complete with calculator, alarm clock, and a customizable phone book. It is also Bluetooth-enabled, and includes an easy to use 2MP camera that shoots videos.

Furthermore, this model has a single click emergency button on the back of the device that is activated with a long press. The phone sets an alarm off, and tries to connect with five preset numbers in succession until someone picks up. It will also send a text message to each call recipient.

Accessibility review

Vision

The Alcaltel 20.01 may be suitable to persons with low vision. The phone has large and bold tactile keys that tell users out loud which key is being pressed. In addition, soft keys are large enough to handle comfortably, and their functions are easy to identify.

However, it is inaccessible to blind persons. Because the phone does not support screen readers, these users are unable to access the software menu.

Hearing

The Alcatel 20.01 has a Hearing Aid Compatibility rating of M3/T4. Hearing impaired users will also be able to send text messages with this phone. However, deaf users may have a limited experience as this device does not enable video-calls.

Dexterity

This handset offers several features that may improve the experience to persons with poor manual dexterity skills. These include predictive text and speed dialing features, a simple locking and unlocking system, and hands free calling features, among others.

However, persons who lack manual dexterity skills may not be able to use this phone. The handset is not compatible with speech recognition software that would enable them control it with their voices. In addition, the phone offers no possibility to control it with assistive devices such as styluses, headwands or mouth sticks.

Comprehension

The Alcatel 20.01 has been designed with usability in mind so it may be suitable to persons with certain cognitive disabilities. In addition, the menu icons are standardized and easy to recognize, and the phone book is perfectly customizable.
