A group of agencies belonging to the United States government have made available a toolkit containing a series of guides to encourage US federal agencies and companies to improve access to social media and/or Blog content for people with disabilities. The Toolkit, named Improving Accessibility of Social Media in Government, is mainly targeted to developers, social media experts and citizens in general.

The guide offers a series of tips to help developers and social media managers create accessible content and updates for Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn, etc. Some tips include adding captions and descriptive text to photos to enable individuals understand what is going in the pictures, spelling out acronyms, and choosing blog templates with simple layouts, among others. The guide also provides recommendations on how to make accessible videos to upload them to sites such as You Tube, Vine and others.

Although this toolkit is not meant to address the needs of social media users, they are encouraged to provide tips and feedback in order to help those trying to effectively reach them.

The guide is available at no cost at DigitalGov website.
