Dispositivo móvil ZTE Open en color azul

The ZTE Open is the first smartphone running on Mozilla’s Firefox OS mainly targeted to first-time smartphone users. While it offers a few interesting features, it may not be accessible to some users with disabilities.

This model is lightweight (140 grams) and measures 114 x 62 x 12.5 mm. It also comes with a 3.5-inch TFT display that despite being capacitive is not very responsive. In fact, simple task such as navigating through menus or opening applications can be very frustrating. In addition, it does not have a great resolution (only 320x480 pixels), but content is displayed with enough sharpness and contrast.

The handset is WiFi and Bluetooth enabled and provides GPS support. Additionally, it includes radio FM and a 3.1 MP rear camera that makes video. Users will also be able to connect this device to a computer with a microUSB/USB cable.

Accessibility review

Vision

The ZTE Open is inaccessible to persons with visual disabilities. It does not include a screen reader nor allows downloading an external one. A screen magnifier is also lacking and it does not provide an option to customize the font style and size, so users with residual sight may have difficulties using this device. Color blind users may also have a limited experience as this phone offers no color inversion features.

Hearing

The device does not include a built-in inductive coupler, so hearing aids users need a loopset to be able to use this phone in the T setting. However, they may be able to use it in the microphone mode or through Bluetooth technology if their hearing aids or cochlear implants support it.

Furthermore, while this device allows text messaging, some popular chat applications such as WhatsApp are not yet available. In addition, deaf users who prefer communicating in sign language will be unable to make video-calls with this device because it lacks a front-side camera.

Dexterity

Amóvil cannot recommend this handset to persons with dexterity issues mainly because it lacks a voice recognition feature, and the keys are not large enough for these users to press them comfortably. Another downside is the lack of response speed of the display which can be problematic for some users with dexterity disabilities, since they might have to press the keys more than once in order to perform desired tasks.

However, there are a few features available that can improve the experience to persons with dexterity disabilities. For example, the device’s weight and size allow carrying it around without problems. It also includes predictive text and hands free features.

Cognition

The ZTE Open includes standardized icons and symbols that may help users with certain limited comprehension skills or learning disabilities.
